Teeth In The News
Have you heard? Flossing may prevent heart attacks and strokes!!
In a recent study a link was found between flossing and heart disease. The study found that people who floss on a daily basis are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. It appears that the bacteria that causes plaque and calculus (tartar) also are responsible for the release of a chemical that allows cholesterol to block the arteries in your heart and brain. By flossing on a daily basis (and decreasing the amount of plaque and calculus) the rate of blockage is decreased and therefore you are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
Red Wine May Reduce The Risk Of Oral Cancer
Red wine, which protects you from heart disease, contains two chemicals (resveratrol and quercetin) that inhibit the growth of cancer cells and their DNA replication in laboratory studies. So that evening glass of wine may be better for you than you thought.
Black Tea May Fight Cavities
Black tea may help fight cavities. Recent research done by the Periodontics Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry found black and green teas contain chemicals called Polyphenols which kill or suppress the growth of the cavity causing bacteria. Tea leaves are also a source of naturally occurring fluoride.
Are You Pregnant?
Believe it or not, flossing is important for the health of your unborn baby. Scientists have found that the presence of periodontitis (inflamed gums from not flossing properly; see Patient Information link) may be responsible for pre-term births. Although the evidence is not yet conclusive there is a very strong suggestion that there is a link.
Tobacco May Be Riskier Than You Think.
The use of tobacco products accounts for 80 to 90 percent of all oral cancers. One pack of cigarettes per day increases your risk of oral cancer by 4.5 times. Tobacco and alcohol on a daily basis can increase your risk up to 100 times!
Lysterine Mouthwash Is Very Effective At Decreasing Gingivitis.
A recent study preformed a several universities has shown Lysterine mouthwash to be as effective as flossing alone in decreasing the inflammation caused by plaque. It's great news but don't think you can throw your floss away. The study also reinforced how important it is to floss also. With proper home care of your teeth, they can last a lifetime.
